The Western Railway Mazdoor Sangh (WRMS) union, which represents more than 80,000 workers of the total 112,000 work force of the Western Railway has urged the government not to roll back the railway fares hike recommended by the sacked Railway Minister, Dinesh Trivedi.

J G Mahurkar, General Secretary, WRMS and Vice President of National Federation of Indian Railwaymen said:

“Indian Railways is in urgent need of modernisation to assure safety, improved productivity and advance technologies.

“The Railways have fallen to a vicious circle of diminishing efficiency and falling safety standards are ending up as a burden on national economy instead of being its vital support.

“The fares hike has been announced after nine years and the revenue generated will be invested in key areas like track technology, stations, terminals, public private partnership, land and dedicated freight corridors,” he added.

The union has also sent a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh urging him not to roll back the hike.

In the letter, it states ‘any roll will damage the transport system which is in need of inputs and to fulfil the promises made to 23 million passengers travelling daily on Indian Railways daily.

‘Due to unavailability of funds projects are not completed.

‘The development process of Indian Railways is virtually put on hold because there is a serious money crisis everywhere in the system’.
