The Settle-Carlisle Walking Festival looks like being a huge success this May.
Everest mountaineer, Alan Hinkes OBE (left), will start two guided walks from Garsdale station on Friday 4th May, during the week long Settle-Carlisle Walking Festival. The festival lasts from 1st to 7th May.
‘The May 4th walks are Wensleydale Railway’s contribution to the festival,’ says Ruth Annison of Askrigg. ‘In the past, Garsdale station served both railways, although there is now an 18 mile missing link between the two lines.
However it is a long-term goal of Wensleydale Railway to rebuild the missing link and reinstate a rail connection with the Settle-Carlisle line at Garsdale. We are very grateful to Alan for his interest and for joining us on May 4th.’
Alan Hinkes is the first Briton to reach the top of all 14 of the world’s mountains over 8000 metres high. Garsdale station, on the remote Cumbria-Yorkshire border, is served by Northern Rail.
On 4th May trains arrive from Carlisle at 10.02 and from Leeds at 10.21.
Walks will start from the station at 10.30: a strenuous 10 mile high level walk and an alternative moderate 6 mile walk, both ending in Hawes. Return to the station is by bus (£3 fare).
There is no need to book for the walks but bring suitable footwear and clothing, packed lunch and drinks.
