Birse Rail has completed an ‘Access for All’ project at Sittingbourne Station in Kent for Network Rail.

The £1.4m design and build contract entailed the installation of a new footbridge with two new lift towers and plant rooms, forming part of a multi-million pound investment through the Government’s ‘Access for All’ scheme.

During the contract a number of improvements were made to station facilities including new waiting shelters, platform surfacing/tactiles, new and additional CCTV and lighting, more cycle parking spaces, access ramps and renovated passenger toilets.

These have been funded through the £150m National Stations Improvement Programme.

Peter Anderson, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty Rail commented:

“Our in-depth understanding of the challenges associated with this project has resulted in a station that is now easier for everyone to use, especially for passengers with mobility problems, those transporting heavy luggage or parents negotiating platforms with children and pushchairs in tow.”
