Rail services provider Amey is preparing to deliver the UK’s first ever high output electrification project as part of Network Rail’s £700 million programme to increase speed and capacity on the network.

Amey has been awarded a five-year OMD (operate, maintain and deliver) contract to electrify the Great Western Main Line.

As part of this, Amey will use ‘pioneering high output machinery plant’ brought in from Germany, known as High Output Plant System.

Amey and its supply chain ‘expect to recruit and train a total of 150 rail workers’ to deliver the project along the line between Maidenhead and Cardiff, and spurs to Oxford and Newbury.

The company said it is ‘committed to keeping the rail line open’ while this work is taking place to minimise disruption.

Mel Ewell, Chief Executive of Amey, said:

“We are extremely proud to secure this contract and help Network Rail deliver a step change in electrification.

“This contract seals our reputation as a total rail infrastructure services provider. We look forward to continuing to bring together our consulting and delivery capabilities to maximise time and cost savings for our customer.”
