The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) had organised a public hearing to assess the environmental and social impact of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro Corridor.

The hearing saw huge participation of people located at Chimatpada, Marol and Sahar Village, which are likely to be affected by the project and recorded their objection and suggestions for the project.

Speaking on the development, SVR Srinivas, Managing Director, MMRC said:

“All likely project affected families will be rehabilitated only after proper survey is conducted, appropriate communication is established, in the best possible manner and following the resettlement policy laid down by the government.”

During the hearing, suggestions were raised concerning combining Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd metro corridor with the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro corridor to the dropping of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro corridor altogether and promoting the Bus Rapid Transit System.

However, MMRC made it clear that innumerable underground utilities will not be affected by the fully underground Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro corridor as the same will travel more than 20 meters below the surface.

Although, metro is a ‘fail-safe system’, an extensive disaster management plan is being chalked out and will be applicable for underground as well as the elevated metro corridors, Srinivas said.

Pointing out the possibility of more than five million cubic meters of muck will be generated by the underground corridor, he guaranteed proper disposal of the same at approved sites and in scientific manner.
