Officials have said that a 68-year-old woman has died from her injuries after a head-on crash between two trains near Amsterdam on Saturday.

117 people were injured in the accident which happened near Sloterdijk, and 16 people still remain in hospital.

It is not known why the two trains ended up travelling towards eachother on the same stretch of track.

A spokesman for Nederlandse Spoorwegen said one of the trains involved serves the cities of Den Helder and Nijmegen, whilst the other runs between Amsterdam and Uitgeest.

The director of NS refused to speculate on what had caused the collision and said crash investigators would study both trains’ ‘black box’ records.

Some passengers had to be lifted from the wreckage by cranes and a helicopter was used to transfer people to hospital.

Two investigations will look at whether human error or a mechanical problem led to the collision.
