Rail delays as DLR suspended

The whole of the Docklands Light Railway system in London was suspended this morning because of a ‘communications failure’.

Trains on the DLR were unable to operate on safety grounds from the start of service due to a failure of the radio system. Although services started again around 8am, delays were seen throughout the morning peak.

A signalling problem also meant delays were seen at London’s Liverpool Street station.

London Overground services were also disrupted due to over-running engineering works.

These problems come after East Midlands Trains drivers went on strike yesterday, causing the train operator to run a revised timetable that included replacement buses. The driver members of the ASLEF union are expected to strike again tomorrow in a row over pensions.

Bob Crow, general secretary of the Rail Maritime and Transport union, said:

“The suspension of the DLR shows again the massive transport challenge faced by London for the Olympics and the importance of having properly staffed and equipped emergency teams to deal with every eventuality.”

On Twitter this morning, Transport for London said:

“Apologies to all passengers affected by DLR suspension this morning. Max fares for all affected will be automatically refunded.”
