Heathrow Express has unveiled its new refurbished fleet of trains, with the first one set to go into service tonight.

The refurbishment to ‘premiumise’ the brand ‘mirrors an airline experience whilst complying with forthcoming safety standards due to be introduced in 2019’, the train operator said.

The project has taken Heathrow Express nine months from drawing to delivery, working closely with teams from Siemens, Railcare and Interfleet. In total, over 200 suppliers have provided in excess of 1,300 new components.

The operator said the interior of the fleet has been designed with an aircraft interior in mind.

Dan Smith, Head of Engineering at Heathrow Express has been responsible for the management of the project.

Ahead of the launch today he said:

“Heathrow Express was built with airline customers and business travellers in mind.

“This recent wave of investment means the fleet is years ahead in terms of safety compliancy and continues to lead the way in terms of on board innovation and technology as well as improving the style and comfort that our passengers deserve”.

  1. These are not new trains.

Travelling on an airline is, for most passengers, a rather unpleasant experience. Why not make the train more train-like and distinctive in its comfort rather than more airline like? Believe in your product!
