A Swanage Railway volunteer and devoted charity fund raiser has been chosen to carry the Olympic flame.

Fifty-one-year-old former soldier Frank Roberts, who works as a Surrey and Berkshire station manager, is one of a select few people who will be carrying the torch through the seaside resort on Friday, July 13.

Frank said: “I feel very privileged, honoured and delighted to be one of the people carrying the Olympic torch through Swanage – it’s a very historic, inspirational and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

A Swanage Railway volunteer for almost 30 years, Frank helped fund the restoration and development of the historic Herston Halt station on the outskirts of the town, which was the steam railway’s first new station and opened in 1984.

Frank’s charity work includes walking the 633-mile south west England coastal path during the summer of 2011. The walk raised more than £3,000 for the Heroes’ Haven holiday home Swanage, which helps injured service people and their families.
