Siemens has given journalists a sneak preview of what it will present at this year’s InnoTrans –Â the world’s largest trade fair for transport technology – during a visit to the company’s Vienna plant.
The train builder will exhibit Avenio , Siemens’ most advanced tram, and Inspiro, the company’s new-generation metro train, along with various other items of rolling stock including Vectron locomotives and an RIC sleeping car.
In November last year, Siemens won a €115 million to supply 40 Avenio trams to HTM in Den Haag.
The Avion is a 100 per cent low-floor tram, with the lowest axle load any such tram. It also has an extremely low level of wear, which means tyres need only be replaced every 450,000 – 500,000 kilometers.
With its aluminum body shell, the Inspiro, now being produced for Poland, Â is approximately 97 per cent recyclable and its green credentials are reflected in the use of tree-like hand rails, called tree lights.
In February this year, Siemens announced that the short-distance rail sector is worth around  €7 billion a year and is growing by 4 per cent to 5 per cent a year. The company also made clear its intentions to invest €50 million in order to increase capacity for light rail production at its Simmering plant in Vienna.
InnoTrans is being held in Berlin from September 18-21.
