A Northern Rail train had to be taken out of service after being pelted with bricks as it passed through a level crossing.

The driver’s front cabin window was cracked during the barrage, resulting in the train being taken out of service when it reached Newcastle.

The incident happened as the train left Seaham station for Hexham at 2.18pm on June 23.

When the service passed Seaham level crossing, a group of youths started throwing objects at the train from the wooded area close to the station.

Pc Nick Jones, who is investigating for British Transport Police (BTP), said: “This type of behaviour is extremely dangerous as any object thrown at a train has the potential to become a lethal weapon due to the speeds involved.

“The individuals who did this were endangering railway passengers and it is vital that we trace those responsible to prevent this happening again.

“I urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident or have any information to contact us.”
