Embarrassment: East Midlands Trains drivers to strike during Olympics

Listen to this article

ASLEF’s Executive Committee has announced that approximately 450 ASLEF members employed by East Midland’s Trains will take strike action on the 6th, 7th and 8th August, right in the middle of the Olympic Games, as part of their on-going dispute with EMT over pensions contributions.

Previous strike action planned to take place from June 23-25, 2012 was suspended to allow for further negotiations to take place. However talks have failed to produce the hoped-for breakthrough.

ASLEF General Secretary Mick Whelan said: ‘To cut pension contributions in the current climate is highly irresponsible. It is widely believed that the fund’s assets have dramatically decreased since the last valuation. Also, any suggestion that drivers would save money ignores the fact that the pension scheme is split 60/40 between the employer and the employee – so if our members are saving £500, the company is saving £750. In total that’s £1,250 a year less going into the fund per active member.”

David Horne, Managing Director of East Midlands Trains, said:  “This is yet another example of ASLEF playing games and is a real kick in the teeth for our customers and the country.”

“We’re certain that the public will be shocked and angry to hear that the union has announced strike action during a time of great national pride for our country.  We hope ASLEF can see sense and call off this unnecessary strike action.”

The offer made to ASLEF in June has already been accepted by three other trade unions recognised by East Midlands Trains.

The East Midlands Trains route was due to be used by athletes traveling between the Official Preparation Camp Headquarters for Team GB at Loughborough University and the Olympic village.
