Disruption on Britain’s rail network has continued for a second day, as heavy rain affects services across northern England.

Services run by Arriva Trains Wales, CrossCountry, East Coast, First TransPennine Express, Northern Rail and Virgin Trains have either been severely affected or cancelled completely.

Torrential rain has flooded routes between York and Edinburgh, Crewe and Chester, and Leeds and Morecambe.

The Environment Agency has issued 74 flood warnings in England alone.

A spokesperson for the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) said: “Some rail services have been affected by flooding caused by heavy rain and we would like to apologise to passengers affected by the disruption.

“Train companies and Network Rail will continue to work together to solve the problems and ensure as many trains can safely run as possible.”

Further south, trains between Great Malvern and Hereford have been cancelled heavy rain damaged an embankment which collapsed during heavy rainfall earlier in the summer.

Engineers were originally called out in June to repair the underground hole.
