Treat rail footpaths like busy roads, says Network Rail in new ad

A new Network Rail advert is urging people walking through the British countryside to stay safe and treat rail footpath crossings as they would a busy road.

The campaign follows an online video released this summer staring British rap artist Professor Green, asking people to remove their headphones at level crossings.

Network Rail currently has a £130 million investment programme to improve level crossing safety. Projects include removing 750 crossings by 2014, employing more than 100 level crossing managers and replacing footpath crossings with footbridges

Martin Gallagher, head of level crossings for Network Rail said: “While fatalities at level crossings are at a low, there have been more pedestrians than motorists killed at crossings in recent years, and so we wanted to focus our campaign to connect with this audience.

“We’re doing all we can to make the railway safer by upgrading crossings or closing them if we can, but we hope this advert will raise awareness that we all need to take care and look out for the warning signs ahead of every level crossing; doing so can save your life.”
