Balfour Beatty has been chosen to deliver the £50 million North West Electrification Phase 2 contract.

Work will include the installation of 90 single track kilometres of new electrification.

The project will be led by Balfour Beatty Rail in joint venture with Balfour Beatty Engineering Services who will be undertaking the power and distribution works.

Invensys Rail Limited  will be carrying out the signalling, telecoms and SCADA works.

Completion of the North West Electrification Project Phase 2 is crucial to the timetable changes required by Network Rail in December 2014.

Balfour Beatty Rail was awarded Phase 1 of the North West Electrification project in November 2011.

The North West project includes the 24 km Huyton-Wigan line, the 40km Manchester-Euxton Junction route and the 27 km Blackpool North-Preston route.

Martin Brown, Balfour Beatty Rail’s project director, said: “We are delighted to be awarded the contract for the Phase 2 works. Our latest innovations on this project will demonstrate our commitment towards our zero harm initiatives, sustainability and the seven-day railway.”

  1. It makes sense for Balfour Beatty to carry on westward towards Liverpool. Otherwise, there might be a lengthy gap in progress, as they moved their men and equipment off-site and a new contractor moves in.
