Railway Children donations to double during Christmas period

Railway Children is hoping a campaign to double donations on selected days throughout December will help the charity raise £30,000 over the Christmas period.

The charity, which is aiming to raise the money for street children in Tanzania, is working in conjunction with the Big Give Campaign, which on certain dates this December will match any donations made through its ‘2012 Charity Christmas Challenge’.

Donations made between Thursday, December 6 and Saturday, December 8 will be doubled.

A Railway Children spokesman said: “Christmas is a time for giving, and nowhere is your generosity more appreciated than on the streets of Mwanza, in Tanzania. This is one of the areas where the Railway Children outreach teams have the biggest impact, and where the £30,000 raised by the Big Give Campaign will be focussed.

“Most street children in this area are completely alone and very vulnerable – easy targets for abusers and gangs. Railway Children outreach teams work tirelessly to find these children before the abusers do, getting them to safety and making sure they have access to food, education and a safe environment in which to stay and enjoy a normal childhood.

“We take these simple things for granted, but for a child who has lived their lives on the street these simple comforts are a dream come true – however this invaluable work is impossible without your help. Working in conjunction with the Big Give Campaign, Railway Children are reaching out to the rail industry to dig deep this December to help make these dreams a reality.”
