New London Overground route to open next month

Listen to this article

A new Overground route between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction is due to open next month, completing London’s orbital network.

More than 12 million passengers are expected to use the route – which will call at Wandsworth Road, Clapham High Street, Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Queens Road Peckham and Surrey Quays – each year.

The service will connect with the northern and western sections of the Overground network.

When the service starts on December 9, it will increase the frequency of trains between Surrey Quays and Dalston Junction from 12 trains an hour to 16.

  1. Well that should be good because its almost like the Circle Line but extended and new to London. What about linking the freight only line between Camden Road and South Hampstead with reopening Primrose Hill station as Overground trains to be changed voltage to/from AC 25kv Overhead and DC 750v 3rd rail as most of London Overground’s Class 378’s are dual voltage and about 4tph could operate between Stratford and Watford Junction/Willesden Junction via Primrose Hill and also to electrify the Barking-Gospel Oak to AC 25kv Overhead and plans for further extensions for London Overground in the near future now that’s what I would like to see.

Also to reopen the link between Hoxton/Shoreditch High Street with London Broad Street could be planned to be relocated and opened or to be reopened as a 4 platform station next door to London Liverpool Street station.

Not a very frequent service then !
Alternatively, how about making a GCSE in English a requirement for all your journalists ?

  3. Yes, they should definitely reopen Primrose Hill as there is huge demand for a station there – particularly with The Roundhouse almost next to it, plus it would relieve congestion at Chalk Farm tube; and Primrose Hill is East-West directional, whereas Chalk Farm is North-South – so there is definitely a need…I see no duplication here. Network rail tore down the old Platform roof and buildings at Primrose Hill a few years ago, WITHOUT properly consulting either Camden Council or various residents’ associations, so they’d effectively have to build new buildings on the existing platform. But having a station here is key.
London Overground are planning to open a new station called ‘Surrey Canal Road’ which is south of Surrey Quays. They should also be planning a new station in North Kensington (an area that desperately needs a rail station), should consider reopening East Brixton purely to serve London Overground trains (not inc. freight trains which would also go through it), as London Overground trains bypass Brixton station……which is very odd.
Other new stations should be: Old Oak Common (potential major new hub), and maybe
