Train operator Trenord is planning to exercise an option for 23 new electric multiple units totalling 190 million euros.

The order includes nine three-car and four-five car AnsaldoBreda TSR units and 10 four-car Stadler GTW diesel multiple-units.

The new TSRs would be added to the existing fleet of 80 units already driving on suburban lines in the Lombardy region.

The GTW diesel traction units would be used on non-electrified lines, including the Parma-Brescia and the Pavia-Codogno, Vercelli and Alessandria.

Chief executive of Trenord Joseph Biesuz said: “The purchase of new trains will allow it [Trenord] to continue the implementation of the investment plan of over 500 million euros to be completed by 2015.”
