The Prince of Asturias joined senior Spanish politicians at the inauguration of a new 131 km high-speed rail line between Barcelona and Figueres.

Opening the new line completes an 804 km high-speed network, connecting Madrid with Barcelona and the French border.

Services begin on the 3.7 billion euro extension today (January 9).

Renfe will operate nine trains each day between Figueres and Barcelona, of which eight will continue to Madrid, and two will link up with French high-speed TGV services to Paris.

The project has included the redevelopment of the Barcelona Sants and Girona railway stations and construction of the new Figueres-Vilafant station.

Work is continuing on Barcelona’s second high-speed station, Sagrera, which will be connected to Sants via a 5.8 km tunnel beneath the city.

Travel times between Girona and Figueres have been cut by more than half, to just 14 minutes, by the new link.

Spain boasts the second longest high-speed network in the world, with 3,000 kms now in service.

A detailed guide to the construction of the Barcelona-Figueres high-speed line can be found on the Adif website.
