The president of Athens Metro has signed a contract to extend Athens’ tram system to Piraeus.

The 5.4 km extension will include 12 stops between the metro station at Karaiskaki stadium and the port of Piraeus.

After signing the contract, the president and chief executive of Athens Metro, Christos Tsitouras, said: “This is the second major investment made in Piraeus, which in a few years will have a metro and tram to serve residents and travellers.”

The 61.5 million euro project will be funded by the Greek National Development Programme and the city of Athens.

Athens Metro now plans to acquire 25 new trams to support the expansion.
