Officials open new Turin rail hub

Turin’s new Porta Susa railway station has been opened by Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti.

The new station, which features a 300-metre long glass and steel roof, is now the main rail hub serving Turin.

Italian state operator Ferrovie dello Stato quoted Mario Monti saying the new station was “one of the key projects of the new railway”.

Porta Susa, which was designed by French architecture studio Arep, is intended to reinterpret Italy’s nineteenth-century hall railway stations.

Monti added: “We wanted to create sustainable structures from a economic point of view without being a burden on taxpayers and to show that our generation has been able to do good things for the country that will remain in history.”
