The Assam Government is exploring options to build a new metro system for the city of Guwahati.

Assam will become the first state in North East region of the country to opt for a metro rail system.

Tarun Gagoi, chief minister of Assam, held a meeting with Guwahati Development Department (GDD) and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) recently to discuss the project’s development.

During the meeting, officials agreed that there was an immediate need for a metro rail system or other mass transit system to ease traffic congestion on the capital’s roads.

“The meeting focussed mainly on the need to develop a proper mobility system to streamline the present chaotic traffic situation in the city for which the main strategy identified is to augment the introduction and need for urgent mass public transit mechanism,” an official statement said.

Two corridors have been proposed, including a link between Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and Narengi via Jalukbari, Bharalumukh, Fancy Bazar, Chandmari and Noonmati, which will connect the eastern and western part of the city along a 32.4 km initial corridor, and an 11.8 km second corridor, connecting Paltan Bazar to Khanapara, via Ulubari, Bhagagarh, Ganeshguri and Dispur, in the central and south eastern city regions.
