OBB orders first 100 Desiro trains

Listen to this article

Austrian State Railways (ÖBB) has ordered the first 100 regional Desiro ML-type trainsets from Siemens.

The order, which is worth 550 million euros, follows a deal made in 2010 for 200 EMUs from the German manufacturer.

The three-unit electric trainsets will be delivered from the end of 2015 onwards.

Of the 100 vehicles, 30 trains will serve the S-Bahn in the Austrian capital Vienna and Lower Austria, and 70 will be used for regional rail services in Upper Austria and in Styria.

The S-Bahn trains feature 244 seats, while the regional trainsets will have 259 seats.

“We have once again won out in a tendering procedure with our Desiro platform. This shows that our vehicle is not only optimally designed for urban short-haul traffic but also meets all the requirements of regional operations,” said Jochen Eickholt, chief executive of the Siemens rail systems division.

The Desiro trains will have a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour.
