Mumbai’s new monorail system has completed its first trial run along the city’s 8.8 km Wadala-Chembur route.

Once commissioned, Mumbai will have India’s first monorail network.

The 19.54 km corridor will be world’s second longest monorail corridor – the longest being Japan’s 23.8 km Osaka route.

During the trail run on February 16, the monorail passed through seven stations, including Wadala Depot, Bhakti Park, Mysore Colony, Bharat Petroleum, Fertiliser Township, VN Purav/RC Marg Junction and Chembur.

The construction work on all stations is at completion stage, ahead of the start of service in August this year.

The system has been developed in two separate 8.8 km and 10.7 km phases, connecting Wadala to Jacob Circle.

The project is being completed by a consortium of L&T and Scomi for Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Speaking after the trail run, Jayant Kumar Banthia, chief secretary of Maharashtra state, said: “The Mono Rail will share the burden of suburban railway and will help provide more comfortable journey within the city.

“I am confident that the congested traffic conditions will be eased with the Mono Rail availability.”

“The monorail tests are being conducted regularly this year from Wadala to Chembur and now that the entire 8.8 km first phase is ready with the guide way and beam work finished.

“This trial was important and we happily showcased it today,” said Rahul Asthana, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA.

Work on the 6.5 hectare Wadala Car Depot is also in progress and will provide parking facilities for 21 trains with an operation control centre, a training center, power station, receiving traction substation and administrative facility.
