State officials in Rio de Janeiro have opened a new assembly plant in the region which will produce monorail vehicles for the World Cup host city of Manaus.

The 41,000 square metre site has been constructed following a $30 million investment from MPE, Scomi and Quark.

The factory, which includes three sheds for assembly and one for testing, is equipped to produce six vehicles a month, supplying projects in Sao Paulo and Manaus.

Rio’s state government has said that the new site will have the capacity to serve not only Brazil but the international market.

Governor Sergio Cabral said: “This plant is further evidence that Rio de Janeiro has been growing at an accelerated rate.

“We have large investments in the order of transportation, we are taking the subway to Barra da Tijuca, so that the working class can comfortably reach the bar.

“We will make investments on Line 3 and the monorail is a very important option.”
