Officers carried out training drills on the city’s metro system and the railway which carries tourists up Corcovado Mountain to the Christ the Redeemer monument.

The drills are being carried out in preparation for Pope Francis’ visit in June for World Youth Day – an event organised every two to three years by the Catholic Church.

Million of tourists will travel around the city in the coming years, with the city hosting both the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.

On the Rio Metro, 200 people acted out a terrorist bomb attack.

Major Ivan Blaz of the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE), said: “The balance of the training was very positive. We are prioritizing the sights and mass transportation.

“It is important that people are informed that we are ready to receive tourists.”
