Eurostar experienced its strongest-ever booking period in January to post ‘encouraging’ first quarter figures.

A ticket promotion at the start of the year, which offered 150,000 seats between London and Paris, Brussels or Lille for £59, saw the cross-border high-speed rail service outperform its previous sales record set during the ash cloud disruption in 2010.

Eurostar has announced sales revenue growth of 1 per cent on last year to £213 million and flat passenger numbers of 2.23 million.

Chief executive Nicolas Petrovic described the figures as “encouraging” considering the current state of business travel and prolonged wintry weather.

Petrovic said: “This is an encouraging start to the year in spite of the challenges posed by both the economy and the weather.

“Our sales revenues have grown during a quarter which saw heavy snowfalls and some of the coldest temperatures on record in the South of England and Northern France.

“This quarter’s performance is testament to our enduring popularity with regular and first time travellers alike.”
