Concrete has been poured into the first segment of a new light rail bridge above the Willamette River in Oregon.
Kiwewit Infrastructure West, the contractor leading the $1.49 billion light rail project between Portland, Milwaukie and North Clackamas County, completed the milestone pour on April 24.
Seventy-eight concrete segments will make up the new bridge deck.
The light rail bridge is the first bridge built across the Willamette River in Portland in more than 40 years, and will be the first cable-stayed bridge in the region.
The bridge, which opens to traffic in September 2015, will carry buses, bikes and pedestrians as well as light rail vehicles.
The 7.3-mile project is the region’s sixth MAX construction project to be built and extends from the terminus of the MAX Green and Yellow lines at Portland State University in Downtown Portland to South Waterfront, SE Portland, Milwaukie and North Clackamas County.
