Russian Railways eyes international projects

Russian Railways is exploring rail infrastructure projects in the Persian Gulf, Latin America and Africa, said Vladimir Yakunin during an international summit of leaders of transportation construction in Merano, Italy.

Speaking at the Merano Forum, Yakunin outlined RZD’s involvement in development and modernisation projects in Serbia, Armenia, Abkhazia, Mongolia, and North Korea.

Russian Railways is already pursuing opportunities in Greece, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The forum also discussed the current state of Russia’s railway investment, highlighting the possible 11 trillion rubles that could be spent on the country’s railways by 2020 as Russia pursues plans for a high-speed rail network.

Russian Railways is constructing 157 km of new rail infrastructure in the Sochi region in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Siemens is manufacturing a fleet of 54 new trains to transport passengers throughout the event.
