Two plaques recognising the award-winning efforts to restore the Forth Bridge have been unveiled at the historic crossing.
The new plaques, which represent the Saltire Award for Civil Engineering and the National Railway Heritage Chairman’s Special Award, have been fixed to one of the bridge’s southern approach piers.
Representatives of Balfour Beatty and Network Rail were joined in South Queensferry by engineers and railway experts for the unveiling by Magnus Linklater, president of the Saltire Society and John Ellis, chairman of The National Railway Heritage Awards.
Balfour Beatty was the main contractor on the restoration project – a 10-year commitment that included applying special paint that will last for in excess of 20 years.
Hector MacAulay, Balfour Beatty delivery unit managing director, said: “It has been a privilege for Balfour Beatty to be involved in the restoration of this national icon over the past decade.
“These awards provide active recognition of the considerable efforts made by the hundreds of skilled people from Balfour Beatty, Network Rail, our subcontractors and supply chain, who have restored the Forth Bridge to its original condition and appearance.
“We are delighted their efforts have been honoured in this way.”
Magnus Linklater added: “The Forth Rail Bridge is an icon of Scottish Innovation and design, recognised the world over, and its restoration has more than lived up to that reputation.
“The Saltire Society Civil Engineering Award recognises the teamwork, dedication and physical effort displayed by all those who designed and executed the work to restore the structure to its former grandeur, using ground breaking techniques and methods.”
