The European Investment Bank (EIB) has said it will lend PKP Intercity an extra 118 million euros to support the purchase of a new fleet of Pendolino trains.

The Polish operator has ordered 20 high-speed trainsets from Alstom in a deal worth 665 million euros.

By increasing the loan from 224 million to 342 million euros, the EIB is ensuring the project goes ahead without delay.

The new trains, which enter service in December 2014, will create a high-speed link between the north and south of the country, connecting Gdynia, Warsaw and Krakow/Katowice.

As well as modern rolling stock, the loan will fund the construction of a new maintenance depot in Warsaw.
