A haunting concert has been performed in the abandoned tunnels of one of London’s ghost Tube stations.
The concert is one of a three-part series of performances centered around the composer Claude Vivier to mark the London Contemporary Orchestra’s fifth birthday.
The series, which also coincides with Vivier’s 65th birthday and the 30th anniversary of his death, began in a dark corner of the Tube network on May 24.
Aldwych station closed in 1994 and is now only occasionally opened up for small tours.
The performance includes Claude Vivier’s Glaubst du an die Unsterblichkeit der Seele (‘Do You Believe in the Immortality of the Soul?’) – an unfinished piece that tells the story of a journey on the Paris Metro in which Vivier is stabbed by a young man.
As if predicting his own mortality, Vivier was found dead in his apartment on March 12, 1983. A 19-year-old male prostitute was later found guilty of stabbing Vivier to death.
The series continues with performances at the Roundhouse on August 22 and the Oval Space on October 3.
