Three new railway stations including the stunning Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana stop have opened on Italy’s Milan-Bologna high-speed line.
The first phase of the Bologna Centrale redevelopment and the city’s new Mazzini station were also opened during a special ceremony on June 9.
Four new underground platforms have opened at Bologna’s main railway station to accomodate high-speed trains, freeing up space for metropolitan and regional services on the surface lines.
Italian ministers attended opening ceremonies at each of the new stations, travelling between the stops on a high-speed Frecciarossa service.
Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana has been designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and will connect the city with Italy’s high-speed rail network. Passengers will be able to travel to Milan in less than 45 minutes and Bologna in 22 minutes.
Work is still underway at Bologna Centrale AV and new areas will gradually open up to the public between 2014 and 2016.
