Phase two of a light rail network in the Norwegian city of Bergen will open to passengers tomorrow.

The second stage includes 3.6km of double track line and five new stations on top of the 15 stations already in operation.

Bergen’s new tram network opened in 2010 and is thought to have been northern Europe’s ‘first new-built light rail in 50 years’.

Atkins provided design of the track, catenary and rail power supply and RAMS-work for the overall design.

Atkins’ project manager Torsten Valentin Summer said: “This project is a great example of team collaboration at its best, working together to come up with buildable technical solutions and efficient project management.

“The result was beneficial all round, with an early completion date and cost-savings for the client.”
