A competition to design a light rail bridge across the Kruunuvuorenselkä river in Helsinki has been won by WSP Finland.

The winning entry, named Gemma Regalis, stretches for 1,167 m across the river, connecting downtown Helsinki with the city’s Laajasalo district.

The concept features a cable-stayed structure with just one single pylon in the centre.

WSP has said it is proud to have produced the winning design for what it believes will become ‘one of the most visible landmarks in Helsinki’.

As well as supporting trams, the bridge will be open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Terhi Tikkanen-Lindström said: “The project challenged us. Due to the Korkeasaari zoo in the bridge area, the traffic volumes are high, and we had to find the best solution in combining tramway, cyclists and pedestrians.

“Finally we proposed a solution whereby tram traffic will be at the same level as the other traffic.”

Second place awards were handed to two separate designs entered by Ove Arup & Partners International and Pontek Consulting Engineers, with 11 designs submitted altogether.
