Officials in Los Angeles have approved a contract worth $1.3 billion for the construction of new 8.5-mile light rail line.

The Walsh/Shea Corridor Constructors consortium will begin work on the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor Project, which will connect the Expo Line on Exposition Boulevard and the Metro Green Line, in 2014.

The project’s total cost has risen to $2.1 billion and includes construction of the new line, eight stations and new rolling stock.

LA’s new light rail line is expected to open to passengers in 2019.
