A station construction contract worth almost $24 million has been awarded for Toronto’s new Union Pearson (Express) rail link.

Transport authority Metrolinx has announced that EllisDon Corporation will build the UP Express station and a new platform at Union Station.

The new 3 km line, which will connect Toronto Pearson International Airport with the city centre, is scheduled to open in time for the Pan/ParaPan American Games in summer 2015.

Kathy Haley, president of UP Express, said: “To have all the components of the project construction underway marks a significant milestone in the delivery of UP Express.

“We are less than two years away from launching the UP Express, which will transform the way Torontonians experience our city and the way the world experiences Toronto.”

As well as UP Express station, the project includes improvements to Bloor and Weston GO stations, an expansion of the Kitchener line and new rolling stock.

  1. This UP project is a blight on toronto. It does not service the local population because the line only has two stops between the airport and down town, also it is an executive service costing approximentally $30 one way! If the government and Metrolinx used this as a muti-stop line, that would really reduce the number of cars and increase the effectiveness of our public transportation system. Furthermore the Liberal government has chosen to use deisel trains instead of electric trains. The government has had many years to pull this off and has floundered the opportunity just like the cancelled power stations that cost Ontarians close to half a billion dollars.

    • I completely agree. The UP project will not benefit the Toronto in the long run since it doesn’t service many areas between Pearson and Union. What a squandered opportunity to truly improve transit in the within Toronto and surrounding area’s.
