California high-speed rail will benefit the environment, says new report

Listen to this article

California’s high-speed rail link will cut the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by ‘four to eight million tons of CO2 by 2030’, according to a new report.

Construction of the new network would be carbon neutral and involve planting thousands of trees around the Central Valley between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The project’s green credentials have been outlined in a new report.

“Our commitment is to make positive environmental contributions from day one,” said chief executive of the California High-Speed Rail Authority Jeff Morales.

“High-speed rail will transform the state’s transportation system while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing environmental benefits for years to come.”

“This report details important steps that the High-Speed Rail Authority is taking to curb greenhouse gas emissions in California and embrace renewable energy during operations,” said Brian Kelly, Secretary of the California State Transportation Agency.

Design and construction contracts for the first section of the $69 billion line have now been awarded.

  1. Yeah, plant a bunch of trees and call yourself carbon neutral. What a scam. Tell you what, plant the trees and forget the high speed rail. Helps the environment the most.

  2. Who commissioned this report? What facts do they have – presentable facts not the typical consultant hired by a government agency or friend, studies from quality organizations that eliminate the bias that always come with politically generated studies. HSR for CA is the ObanaCare boondoggle that will take this state (that is totally broke not only with money but with a super majority that has been totally our of control for 40+ years) down. The above article is just physio-babble from the authority, which is normal business for them.

  3. high speed rail is just a way to take money from the taxpayers faster. if it can’t survive on its own it shouldn’t be there. solar, wind, oil, or bulls*it

  4. Isn’t it lovely to see our transatlantic friends taking such a balanced view towards a much needed railway project, Of course, more investment in new and improved roads are well known for their effectiveness and their environmental friendliness. I agree that well researched figures are needed and that they are notoriouly unreliable but I would bet that a well built and run shinkansen type service between the bigger towns in California would attract many passengers.
