The 400 km/h Frecciasrossa 1000 has been unveiled at Bombardier’s Vado Ligure factory, as the high-speed train moves into the next phase of testing.

With passenger services set to begin in 2015, the first of the new fleet will now set off on trial runs between Genoa and Savona.

More than 250 guests attended a special launch ceremony, including Mauro Moretti, managing director of Trenitalia, and Lutz Bertling, president of Bombardier Transportation.

Although the new high-speed service will have a maximum operating speed of 360 km/h, it is expected to top 400 km/h during testing.

To put that into context, Britain’s High Speed 1 runs a commercial service of 300 km/h and even Spain and France’s fastest high-speed trains don’t go above 350 km/h.

Bombardier has said that the Frecciarossa’s ‘advanced high acceleration enables the train to deliver excellent travel times, even on winding routes’.

Lutz Bertling said: “We are delighted to be here today to unveil this stunning new train, which is a game changer in the industry.

“I am confident the Frecciarossa 1000 will become a world reference in very high-speed travelling. It is a train that opens a window to a future in which high speed is not just about travelling faster but cost effectively, more comfortably, safely and without frontiers.”

The Frecciarossa 1000 has been built by Bombardier alongside partner AnsaldoBreda.
