An industrial hub currently under construction in Dubai is to be connected to UAE’s new rail network under an agreement announced this week.

Etihad Rail has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai Industrial City which will see a freight terminal built within the 55-square-kilometre site as part of the region’s ambitious rail plans.

A 1,200 kilometre railway is currently under construction that will transport both passengers and goods between Saudi Arabia and Oman.

The Dubai Industrial City terminal falls under stage two of the project, with stage one between Habshan-Ruwais due to open later in the year.

Nasser Al Mansoori, chief executive of Etihad Rail, said: “Etihad Rail is part of a greater vision to drive economic growth and development in the UAE by bringing geographic markets closer together.”

“The construction of this station – and the Etihad Rail project more broadly – will greatly contribute to the diversification of Dubai’s economy,” added Abdulla Khalifa Belhoul, chief executive of Dubai Industrial City.

“It will drive investment in infrastructure, transport and the wider value chain, while providing additional connectivity and operational efficiency for companies across the UAE.”
