Accident investigators are determining what caused a high-speed AVE train to crash in Spain, killing 80.
The Madrid-Ferrol service derailed outside Santisago de Compostela at around 9pm on July 24.
Eighty people have been reported to have died, with many more of the 218 passengers seriously injured.
Engineers from Adif and Renfe were quickly on the scene to help with rescue effort and begin repairing the damaged section of track.
All eight carriages were severely damaged.
National and international media reports have confirmed that the driver is now being formally held, following earlier suggestions that they may have been exceeding an 80km/h speed limit at the time of the crash.
Spain’s President Mariano Rajoy visited the scene of the accident and subsequently declared a three-day mourning for the victims.
In an official announcement he said “you will not be alone in this process,” adding “the solidarity of everyone in Spain will be with you always”.
Minister of Public Works Ana Pastor also offered her condolences to the families of those who died in the crash.
