Crossrail can now open the bidding for the Woolwich station fit out contract after funding was confirmed for the project.
Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport (DfT) have given Crossrail the green light to start work on the Woolwich interchange after receiving confirmation of necessary funding contributions.
Housing developer Berkeley Homes, which supported the construction of the station box, and Royal Borough of Greenwich have finalised contributions worth £54 million.
Crossrail has said that any additional costs will be taken out of the project’s overall budget.
John Anderson, Executive Director of Berkeley Homes, said: “We have always been wholly committed to a Crossrail station within our flagship Royal Arsenal Riverside development and this is a vital step forward in the Crossrail project.”
Originally, Woolwich did not feature on the Crossrail map. However, as the Crossrail Bill went through the Commons, an agreement was reached with Berkley Homes for the construction of the station box.
Crossrail Minister Stephen Hammond MP said: “A Crossrail station will provide significant opportunities for regeneration in the area, supporting jobs and growth and dramatically improving connectivity for people travelling between Woolwich and Canary Wharf, the City and the West End.”
An invitation to tender will be issued later this year, with work expected to start in late 2014.
