$189m committed to Houston light rail expansion

A further $189 million has bee approved by the United States Congress to fund two extensions to Houston’s light rail network.

Around $900 million has already been pledge to improving the network and the latest grants will pay for the North/Red line extension ($94.5 million) and the Southeast/Purple Line ($94.5 million).

Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) said it expects to receive the funds within 30 days.

Tom Lambert, METRO interim president and chief executive, said: “This action allows us to finish the work the people of Houston voted for.

“Congress is giving us a critical tool with this funding, and we are taking every step we can to make sure these are dollars well spent.”
