Transport for London (TfL) is to start work on doubling a section of track on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) network in a bid to increase capacity on the route by 1,100 journeys an hour.
Work will start next week (August 20) to install a second set of tracks between Stratford and Canary Wharf/Lewisham.
The ‘double tracking’ is part of a wider programme of improvements in the area, which includes the redevelopment of Pudding Mill Lane station.
The new station, which will be built 25 metres south of the existing station to make way for Crossrail, will have the ‘largest capacity on the DLR network’.
TfL’s director of rail Jonathan Fox said: “This work will bring a real boost to the service enjoyed by the thousands of passengers who use this route and help to encourage even more people on to the DLR.
“In addition, when the Pudding Mill Lane upgrade project is completed and a new station with the biggest capacity on the DLR is opened, it will provide excellent access for people travelling to events at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
“This contribution to the continued post-Olympics regeneration of this part of London has come about due to close and effective collaboration with our Crossrail colleagues.”
The new Pudding Mill Lane is opened and it’s larger than the old station which is to be knocked down and a new ramp to be built for Crossrail tunnelling to commence to whitechapel and to Stratford which the Shenfield metro line would not be used but used as a slow section.
