Train operator Southern has expanded its smart ticketing service to include single and return journeys.

It marks the next step in the development of Southern’s smart card, called ‘The Key’, after season tickets were added to the electronic ticketing system in June.

The service, which works in the same way as London Underground’s Oyster, allows passengers to load journeys onto their card without the need for paper tickets.

Southern’s head of retail development, Riz Wahid said: “We’re delighted to add yet another suite of tickets to The Key, giving our passengers much more choice about the tickets they buy.

“We’re busy planning more exciting developments which will offer more flexibility, as well as expanding The Key into London.”

The Key is currently available at most Southern stations outside London, but there are plans to extend across Southern’s entire network.
