Contracts totalling €300m awarded for Grand Paris Express line

A series of major contracts, worth an estimated 300 million euro, have been awarded, paving the way for the construction of a new 100km orbital railway in Paris.

The red line (line 15), one of four new lines being built as part of the Grand Paris Express project, will run around the outskirts of the city, allowing passengers to travel between Parisian suburbs without going through the city centre.

The entire project will involve the construction of two brand new lines and extension of two existing routes.

Described as the city’s flagship infrastructure project, the Grand Paris Express is expected to take shape over the next 15 years, eventually adding over 200 miles to the Paris Metro network.

In total, the Grand Paris Express is expected to cost over 20 billion euro. In July, 5.3 billion euro was approved to allow the Société du Grand Paris (SGP), the authority in charge of the expansion programme, to award the initial contracts.

A consortium led by Systra will oversee the design and construction of the first phase of line 15 – a 21km line between Noisy-Champs and Villejuif Louis Aragon. While engineering consultancy Setec will manage the delivery of a 12km section between Villejuif Louis Aragon and Pont de Sevres.

Both Systra and Setec have also been handed a consultancy role on lines 15, 16 and 17, with Systra advising on rolling stock and automatic train control systems and Setec, along with EGIS, managing the systems for tunnels and stations, telecommunications and electromechanical equipment.

A third consortium of Artelia, Arcadis and BG Consulting has been appointed to project manage the entire programme.
