Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is to make more than 100 staff members redundant following the introduction of electronic ticketing on the city’s subway system.
CTA has said that the move, which will save the authority $13 million a year, will see 149 positions cut.
The job losses are in part due to the introduction of the Ventra smart card system.
None of the roles are expected to be safety related or customer facing and 45 of the abolished positions are currently vacant.
CTA said “the majority of eliminated positions reflect a broader reorganisation of roles, consolidations of duties, and eliminations of redundant functions throughout the agency”.
CTA president Forrest Claypool said: “These changes are a continuation of our efforts over the past two years to create an efficient and cost-effective organisation.
“By reorganizing and streamlining, we gain immediate savings while maintaining the current level and quality of service provided to customers.”
