Edinburgh’s new tram network will be up and running in May 2014, the City if Edinburgh Council has announced.

Councillors today (September 17) confirmed that the system would open in eight months time, having previously indicated hopes to launch Edinburgh Tram in summer 2014.

A section of the route between Gogar depot and Edinburgh Park Station will be handed over for testing next month, with testing due to start across the entire network in December.

Transport Convener Lesley Hinds said: “Our target for launch is now May 2014, but we’ll bring this forward if we can and we’ll announce a start date for the tram service when we’re 100 per cent sure.

“There’s a major testing, commissioning and driver training programme to be done, work to be done on tram stops and, of course, a Scottish winter to get through.”

The city council continues to street that the project remains within the revised £776 million budget, having been increased from £545 million in 2011.

Despite being two years behind the original completion date, the project has been making good progress since the new budget and timetable were announced.
