AnsaldoBreda has come out in defence of its V250, challenging claims made about the safety of its trains.

AnsaldoBreda chief executive Maurizio Manfellotto has suggested that if NS had proceeded with a plan drawn up between AnsaldoBreda and the operator to reinstate some passenger services, five modified trains could have been available to return to service in the autumn.

During a press conference on September 16, Manfellotto described it as “the only safe immediate solution”, with any plans to procure new rolling stock likely to cost significantly more and prolong the return of trains to the route.

Manfellotto also used the press conference to again stress that the V250 was safe, having passed all required testing, and claimed that the failure was down to the operation of the train not a defective design.

Earlier this month, the Dutch operator officially announced the cancellation of its order for a further 16 Fyra trains.

Fyra high-speed services have been out of operation since January after an investigation found that an ice build up had caused components to fall off the undercarriage of a number of trains.

Despite being withdrawn nine months ago, Fyra trains have been seen performing low-speed runs to prevent corrosion and damage.
