The first of a new fleet of dazzling Gold Coast trams, the only tram in the world with its own built-in surfboard rack, has gone on show.
A launch ceremony was held by operator GoldLinQ to unveil its brand new light rail vehicle, which arrived in the country on September 10 in the Port of Brisbane from Germany before being transported by road to the Gold Coast.
The new tram will be one of a fleet of 14 seven-car Flexity 2 trams that will serve the first phase of the new network between Gold Coast University Hospital and Broadbeach.
The newly-delivered tram will now undergo testing along the phase one of the route.
More units will be delivered over the coming months, with passenger services set to begin from mid-2014.
The $1.2 billion Gold Coast light rail project is an 18-year PPP between the Queensland State Government and GoldLinQ – a consortium comprising Bombardier Transportation, Keolis, Downer Rail, McConnell Dowell and the Plenary Group.
As well as a surf board rack, the trams have been styled to include a wave motif on the cab front.
